Lalibela – 13th Century Stone Carved Churches

Bete Giyorgis

We visited Lalibela in November after attending a family wedding in Addis Ababa. Lalibela is one of Ethiopia’s most famous Ethiopian Orthodox pilgrimage spots. The 13 churches of Lalibela are carved from rock (some from a single piece!) They are truly an architectural marvel. Amidst the pilgrims shrouded in white and clouds of fragrant incense, it is a bit like stepping back into the mystical Middle Ages…

Bete Gabriel-Rufael (possibly a former royal palace)
